In coming weeks, the Alabama Legislature is expected to extend the public school calendar by five days.
In anticipation of the change, one wiregrass school district has taken a proactive position in regard to the possible change.
By a unanimous vote the Enterprise school board approved Superintendent Dr. Jim Reese's recommendation.
By going from a 182 to a 187 school calendar, the students and teachers will be in class past the Memorial Day holiday weekend in the 2006-07 year.
Traditionally, that holiday marked the end of the school calendar.
In the event a 187-day calendar is not directed by the Legislature, the Enterprise school board also approved the 182-day semester.
