At Monday’s Geneva County commission meeting, Sheriff Greg Ward asked the board to look at all options in regard to the construction of a new jail.
The inmate population has nearly doubled the maximum population limit of 42.
Without saying he supports a 2.5 percent increase in property taxes, Sheriff Ward says such an option is listed in state statute.
The motion to put a property tax option on the November general ballot died for the lack of a second.
On Thursday, March 9 at 7 p.m. commissioner Fred Hamic plans to hold a public forum on the jail issue at the Geneva County Farm Center.
