Trees not only help with erosion, but they also help cut energy costs.

At the Kiwanis Park Wednesday, a dogwood tree was planted in recognition of Houston County’s commitment to beautifying its landscape.

Arbor Day is recognized nationally.

Dothan Landscape Manager Nancy Walker says, "We do this as a community throughout the United States. Then each community does it and we encourage people to plant trees in yards, they make a great present, we just want to get more trees planted."

The National Forestry Commission will be giving away a variety of trees including oaks, pines, and dogwoods this Friday morning Feb. 24 at the north side Wal-Mart starting at 10 a.m.

This is a first come, first serve event.
