A convicted killer from Houston County will remain behind bars a little longer.
Benny Leverette had a parole hearing to get out of prison.
He was charged with murder in the 1996 shooting death of Gregory Lamont Oliver of Dothan.
A jury convicted Leverette of the lesser offense of manslaughter, and he received a maximum sentence of 20 years.
District Attorney Doug Valeska and members of the victim's family convinced the state parole board to deny Leverette's request.
Valeska says he's traveled to Montgomery more than 15 times in recent months to block the parole of convicted felons from Houston County.
