Enterprise Murder

Just after midnight on Saturday, two Enterprise women were fatally shot in front of a mobile home.

A one-time friend of the victims is behind bars on capital murder charges.

At 12:20 a.m. Saturday, Enterprise police arrived outside a mobile home on Wilkerson Street. One woman was dead, and a second died a short time later at the hospital.

They've been identified as 46-year-old Margo Donald and 40-year-old Betty Council. Each had been shot multiple times with a handgun.

Police Chief T. D. Jones would not comment on the motive, but the suspect, Christopher Lee Watkins, was arrested several hours later at a nearby apartment. State Attorney Gary Mcaliley said there's enough evidence to warrant a capital murder charge.

The 25-year-old suspect's uncle doubts his nephew could commit such a horrendous act.

Although not commenting on a motive for the murder, authorities said Wilkerson Street has previously been targeted by police for drug activity.

At this time, Watkins is being held without bond on capital murder charges at the Coffee County Jail.
