Alabama's insurance commissioner is warning doctors who have malpractice coverage with a Virginia company to start looking for other coverage immediately. The insurer does not have money to pay claims.
Doctors Insurance Reciprocal is the malpractice insurer for about 600 to 800 Alabama doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other medical professionals.
But the Virginia company has gone into receivership because of financial problems. Alabama Insurance Commissioner Walter Bell said the situation is critical. Doctors Insurance Reciprocal is part of Reciprocal of America.
