Deployment Ceremony Held For Fort Rucker Soldiers

A deployment ceremony was held for two Fort Rucker units, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Family and friends came together Thursday to wish soldiers good luck in their trip overseas.

About 80 soldiers from the 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group and the first-of the 58th Airfield Operations Battalion will go overseas in early July.

Half of the soldiers will go to Northern Iraq and the other half will be stationed in Kuwait.

Both units were developed less than two years ago and the first of the 58th AOB is the first Army Aviation Unit to command and control Army airfields overseas.

"The soldiers have been working in Airfields management and air traffic services; they are confident and well-trained, especially here in Ft. Rucker, AL with access to training with aircraft," said LTC David Rudy.

The Lieutenant Colonel says about half of these soldiers have been deployed before. Some have even been involved with areas of air traffic before, so he is very confident in this group’s ability to complete their mission.
