Most lawmakers in Washington these days are doing all they can to distance themselves from Jack Abramoff.
But Congressman Dana Rohrabacher says the former lobbyist is "a
good person who's done bad things." The California Republican says
Abramoff is being portrayed "as a monster."
Abramoff pleaded guilty last week to federal conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud charges. As part of the plea, he has agreed to tell the F-B-I about alleged bribes to as many as 20 members of Congress and aides.
Rohrabacher says his longtime friend should be punished for breaking the law. But he says a lot of what's being portrayed as corruption is simply "standard operating procedures for lobbying in Washington."
Rohrabacher says he hasn't been contacted by the investigation. But he says he'll return three-thousand dollars in campaign cash from Abramoff and is willing to return 45-hundred dollars from Indian tribes the ex-lobbyist represented.
