Houston County Engineer Mark Pool said he needs almost $2 million to resurface some county roads, and the cost keeps going up.

Pool said federal funds can be used to resurface heavily traveled county roads, but roads with a traffic count of less than 400 vehicles per day must be resurfaced with only local funds. About 25 miles of Houston County roads are in serious need of repair right now.

Pool estimates the work would cost about $1.9 million, and the price keeps going up because the more the roads deteriorate, the more it costs to fix them. Pool said steps are being taken to come up with the money he needs.

Last year more than 27 miles of Houston County roads were re-surfaced with federal funds.
