2014 Winter Paralympic Games Begin Today in Sochi, Russia

Athletes, media, officials are more are once again gathering in Sochi, Russia for a celebration of sport. This time it s the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games.

The Winter Paralympic Games got their start in 1976, following the in the footsteps of the Summer Paralympics. Athletes with a variety of physical and/or mental disabilities were able to compete in a variety of sports.

Events at the Winter Paralympic Games include Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey, Wheelchair Curling, and Para-Snowboarding. Ice Sledge Racing was competed in previous Paralympics, but is not being competed in Sochi.

80 Athletes will be competing for Team USA in all five major sports.

The opening ceremonies are today, and the games will last through March 16, 2014.
