A diving accident in Northwest Florida has authorities asking the public to be careful and use common sense.
Emanuel Nobles of Bonifay was critically injured after reportedly diving off the Highway 79 Bridge at Westside Park. The 24-year-old suffered severe neck injuries due to the shallow water in Wright's Creek in Holmes County.
Holmes County Sheriff Dennis Lee says signs clearly note not to jump off the bridge within just the last few years.
There have been several serious injuries due to diving into the shallow water.
"Folks need to be careful, obey the signs. After all, this is the second type of incident of someone diving off the bridge into shallow water and breaking their necks," said Sheriff Lee.
Doctors at Memorial Hospital in Bonifay, physicians and E.M.T's have had first hand experience when dealing with an injury stemming from diving and it is often tragic.
"When someone dives in, they usually hit their head first and that causes a chain-reaction into the spine and causes major damage, quite often from there," said Steve Connell with Holmes Co. E.M.T.
Officials stress never jump into a lake, river, or any body of water without first knowing how deep it is.
