Bonifay officials are trying to track some water usage that's never been accounted for.
Accountants say half the water pumped in Bonifay was never paid for during the 2007 fiscal year.
There's no record as to who may have used it.
City Clerk Jeri Gibson says part of the problem stems from the conversion into the new municipal computer system.
In addition, there's leakage in the 75-year-old, underground water lines.
The issue will be addressed immediately.
“We are in the process of looking at the computer information, maybe a problem there; or a major leak, or a person, or persons that are getting water free. We are trying to track it down," said Gibson.
The internal investigation will also look at the possibility that a person or persons may have received free water.
The matter is expected to be discussed in the July meeting of the Bonifay City Council.
