Attorneys for the man who was allegedly caught on a security video abducting an eleven-year-old girl say police didn't sufficiently investigate other suspects before arresting him.
Joseph Smith's lawyer told jurors during opening statements today in Florida that officers prematurely decided to charge his client with the abduction, rape and murder of Carlie Brucia.
He also says Smith was nabbed on possibly faulty DNA evidence.
But prosecutors are insisting there's enough evidence linking Smith to the crime.
Testimony is expected to start later Monday afternoon.
