Love and Smith to Face Off in 2nd District Runoff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery and state Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb will face each other in a Republican primary runoff for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

The winner of the July 15 runoff will face Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright in the Nov. 4 general election.

Love led the Republican Primary field with 35 percent of the vote and Smith was second with nearly 22 percent, narrowly edging Craig Schmidtke to make the runoff.

Love and Smith are hoping to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Terry Everett, who has held the seat since 1993. Republicans have represented the 2nd District in Congress since 1964.
