Unemployment Rate

Alabama's unemployment rate was below the national average in December and remained unchanged from November.

The director of the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations says the jobless rate was five point eight percent in December. That was unchanged from the previous month and below the six percent rate reported in December 2001. The national unemployment rate for December was six percent.

Alabama's December rate represents 125,800 unemployed persons.

The highest unemployment continued to be in rural Washington County in southwest Alabama, where 14.4 percent were jobless. The lowest jobless rate was two point five percent in Shelby County, an affluent suburban county south of Birmingham.
