College Merger

The Alabama Board of Education has given preliminary approval for several mergers that will reduce the number of two-year colleges in the Alabama College System.

Last December, Postsecondary Chancellor Roy Johnson proposed merging Enterprise State Junior College with the Ozark and Mobile campuses of Wallace Community College and MacArthur State Technical College in Opp with Lurleen B. Wallace Junior College in Andalusia.

He also proposed merging Ayers State Technical College in Anniston and Gadsden State Community College.

School officials said the new mergers will cut administrative costs and put more money into the classroom.
