For the seventh year in a row, our area has led the state in the "outshopping" index. This is good news for all areas of our economy, including the job market, business recruitment and growth.
Ask any retailer in Dothan, and most will tell you business is booming. And it's not expected to slow down anytime soon.
Jacksonville State University's outshopping index measures the amount of shoppers who come from other counties to shop here in Houston County, and that number keeps rising. This is significant to Alabama as the state is largely funded by sales tax and it positively reflects job growth.
The Dothan area Chamber of Commerce is planning to bring in several more national retailers within the next two years with Olive Garden being the first. It will be built in 2006.
Officials are expecting the sales index in Houston County to stay on the rise through Christmas season despite all of the giving for the hurricane disasters.
