With tape measures and other devices, Sheriff Greg Ward and Geneva County commissioners got an idea on how much parking space will be taken up by an igloo shaped extension from the Geneva County Jail.
The board narrowly approved spending $200,000 for the temporary jail. Opponents say they rather the money go for a new facility. But Commission Chairman Harry Adkison says it'll still be cheaper than farming out inmates to surrounding counties.
Sheriff Ward says a new jail is the answer. Last week he set a new record with 78 inmates. It's built for a maximum of 42.
In a second motion, the board agreed to let the voters decide on a property tax to pay for a new jail. Geneva County currently has one of the oldest operating jails in Alabama.
