Boys & Girls Club Award

The Boys and Girls Club of the Wiregrass presented their Annual Youth of the Year Award Thursday and Karissa Call is the award winner.

Call has been a member of the club for nine years and was the first female accepted. Workers at the club said that Call is a positive role model for young people.

She received a $1,000 award. Call will advance to the statewide Youth of the Year competition, which will be held in Montgomery in March for a $5,000 award.

History of the Boys and Girls Club of America

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with several women in Hartford, Conn.

  • In 1906, several Boys Clubs decided to affiliate. The Federated Boys Clubs in Boston was formed with 53 member organizations.

  • In 1931, the Boys Club Federation of America became Boys Clubs of America.

  • In 1956, Boys Clubs of America celebrated its 50th anniversary and received a U.S. Congressional Charter.

  • To recognize the fact that girls are a part of our cause, the national organization's name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990.

What Does the Organization Do?

  • To inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. (The Mission Statement)
