PENSACOLA, FL - A volunteer agency is accelerating efforts to help Hurricane Ivan victims recover and rebuild from that storm, but is cutting out fundraising due to Hurricane Katrina. The massive destruction Katrina caused in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama has convinced Rebuild Northwest Florida that it must get its job in the Florida Panhandle done sooner.
Rebuild board member Tommy Tait says the organization must shift gears because of competition for money and workers from communities devastated by Katrina. Rebuild has fixed about 500 houses in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties for people who lack insurance or other means to pay for repairs. It has an estimated 500 to go.
Rebuild's new focus is on hiring electricians and plumbers to finish interior repairs to damaged houses.
