Dothan area tourism is up 4-percent.

Officials say sports play a big role in drawing in visitors.

The Wiregrass Pro Classic Tennis Tournament is just one of the many sporting events that draw in millions of dollars to Dothan each year.

"Sports are so important. We have wonderful golf courses, we have a BMX Track, and we have of course, all the other sports, baseball, softball, swimming. So we always have some kind of tournament going on with our wonderful award-winning Leisure Services Department," says Bob Hendrix, executive director for the Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

A new study for the State Tourism Agency says travel and tourism in Alabama grew by 10-percent in 2007.

In Dothan, we jumped 4-percent and brought in over $207 million dollars in tourism.

"There's nothing better than an 11-year old girls’ tournament because they bring mothers and grandmothers. They go shopping. That is new money to our area," says Hendrix.

And so far, this year is looking bright.

The Dothan area is up 4-percent so far, with the summer months still head.

"There's one thing you're not going to deny the American public; that is the right to take a vacation," says Hendrix.

Bob Hendrix of the Dothan Area Convention & Visitors’ Bureau says tourism employs over 4000 people in Houston County directly and indirectly.
