Governor-elect Bob Riley said he would veto a pay raise for lawmakers, and some legislators said the timing is not right because of the dire financial condition of the state's budgets.
Lawmakers could pass a pay resolution in time for it to go to Gov. Don Siegelman, who could sign it, veto it or leave it up to Riley.
Legislators now make about $30,710. But one Legislator said a more realistic approach to a pay raise may be to offer legislation during the regular session, which begins in March, that would automatically give a small cost-of-living increase when new Legislators take office every four years.
