Miers Hearing Set

The confirmation hearings for Harriet Miers' nomination to the Supreme Court will start on Nov. 7.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter confirmed that date today.

He says senators in the meantime will be looking for more information on Miers. Specter says he and the committee's ranking Democrat, Patrick Leahy, aren't satisfied with the response they received from Miers Tuesday to their questionnaire. He says they want "amplification" on "many, many of the items."

Specter says the hearings may not finish in time for a vote by Thanksgiving. He says the panel will take whatever time it needs.

Democrats had wanted a date later in the month. They say there's no rush, since Sandra Day O'Connor has agreed to stay on the court until her replacement is confirmed.

Senator Charles Schumer of New York says setting a hearing date before getting the information they need is "putting the cart before the horse."
