About 11,000 registered Holmes County voters had the opportunity to decide on whether to build a new hospital.
The results showed an overwhelming passing vote; 3,831 voted yes to the referendum and 704 voted no.
The doctor's memorial administration say the passing of the referendum is the first step in building a $15 million, state-of-the-art health care facility.
The new hospital will be built at the highway 79 and I-10 interchange.
