New Law to Return Coffee County to One Coroner

The Alabama Legislature approved a local bill that will forever change the Coffee County coroner's office.

For the last 33-years, Marvin McIlwain has been the Elba division's coroner. Robert Preachers maintains the same title for the Enterprise division.

Since the 1950's, Coffee County is the only county statewide maintaining two coroner offices.

Alabama lawmakers agreed to consolidate the position in 2010.

McIlwain has long lobbied for a single coroner.

"It will bring continuity to the county. A little known fact is that when we have a coroner election every four-years, the probate juggle must print out two separate ballots with the two different coroners running... one coroner will save the county money," said McIlwain.

McIlwain says he doesn't plan to run for a ninth-term as coroner in next year's election.
