Gas Prices

Attorney General Troy King has issued a second round of subpoenas in his investigation of why gas prices skyrocketed to over three dollars per gallon after Hurricane Katrina hit Alabama.

The first round of subpoenas went to gas stations. The second round included terminals, wholesalers, and refineries owned by major oil companies. King says there will be a third round of subpoenas going throughout the chain of production.

King is conducting the investigation with the help of state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks' staff and other attorneys general who have started similar inquiries in their states. King says state attorneys general are sharing information that they find.

The agriculture commissioner says that based on what he's seen so far, it appears a small number of stations were out of line. But he says it's too early to say whether anyone will be charged with price gouging.
