The Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership will observe National Red Ribbon Week starting Monday through October 14.
Houston County commissioners issued the proclamation Monday morning. Officials encouraged people across the county to wear red ribbons to show support of the program. They also asked school officials to remind students about the dangers of drug-use.
"It's about taking the information about how harmful these drug products are into the schools so our young people understand the consequences, and it's about understanding that statistics are people and not numbers. That every number represents someone’s mother, brother, sister, or father who died from not understanding the harmful side effects of their choices"
Red-Ribbon Week started when undercover drug enforcement administration agent Kiki Camarena was killed during a drug-trafficking bust.
