Convicted Killer Sentenced to Life in Prison

A convicted killer who was sentenced to die, not once, but twice, has now been sentenced to life without parole.

Fifty-year-old Jerry Hammond was convicted of capital murder for the third time last month in the 1988 murder and robbery of his elderly uncle.

Jurors then recommended a sentence of life without parole on an 11-1 vote.

Judge Jerry White was not bound by that recommendation, and District Attorney Doug Valeska urged him to disregard the jury's advice.

Hammond had twice been sentenced to die for the crime, but both cases were overturned on appeal.
