Like other defibrillators when the device senses an abnormal heartbeat it shocks the heart back into a normal rhythm. But unlike other devices this one can actually talk to the doctor.
Ernie always carries his special cell phone with him. The defibrillator uses it as a transmitter to continuously send data back to the hospital’s computer and in an emergency it can even page the doctor.
That could turn out to be a vital feature because defibrillators have come under fire recently.
Thousands of devices were recalled for fear they weren’t shocking the heart correctly, but this new machine knows when it’s malfunctioning and can alert doctors.
The device just became available in the U.S this summer.
