The sounds of "Play Ball" will soon be heard in Webb. The new park is set to open on Saturday.
The new $250,000 dollar park in Webb, located at the corner of Old Webb and Otis Buie roads will make its debut with two ball fields.
It's been a few years in the making and not without some controversy, but soon, the kids will have a place to play.
Webb Park Director Bill Thomas said, “It's been a battle. We have some that really don't feel that we should be spending this kind of money. But in the long run, I think it's going to be a benefit to the town [and] to the surrounding communities.”
The park is the vision of Mayor Byrd Buie who wanted to see the community have a place not only to play ball, but to enjoy as a family.
Even though there won't be a game this weekend, Mayor Buie will see his dream come true when he throws out the first ceremonial pitch.
Mayor Buie said the park is, “The beginning of a new era; I hope that the ball park will play a big part in the community, and hopefully it will bring the community together.”
Webb Park officials say that the ball fields are only the beginning. There are plans for adding on additional recreational facilities.
“We plan on having a playground out here and a walking trail,” Thomas added. “We've got a pond that we're going to stock with fish. Eventually, we'd like to put a football field out here, [and] have football and soccer.”
The hope is that now it's built, the community will come.
The official opening of the new park will be held this Saturday from 9AM until 1PM.
The first season home game will be held on Tuesday, April 15th at 6PM.
