What's being called the "Thomas Drive Flyover" could be completed in a little more than two years. Elected officials and local dignitaries were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremonies.
A model of the completed Thomas Drive Flyover was on display. The $40 million project will consist of elevated roadways for traffic. It'll tie into the new spans of the Hathaway Bridge, which is under construction.
When completed, the flyover consisting of elevated roadways will drastically change the appearance of Highway 98. Panama City Beach Mayor Lee Sullivan said it means Bay County's Transportation needs is catching up with the rest of Northwest Florida.
Houston County native Earl Durden owns the Bay Line and a dozen other railroad companies in the Southeast; he said this project is essential for future growth.
The Thomas Drive and Highway 98 interchange is the first stage in a three-stage project to alleviate traffic in the heavily used tourist corridor.
