Starting next year, Houston County schools will be starting one week later.
Federal law prohibited the system from starting early because of the No Child Left Behind Act.
If a school doesn't make yearly progress in specific academic areas, parents have the option to put their child in another passing school.
However, with Houston County starting a week earlier than everyone else, this wouldn't give parent's time to make that change.
Students will start school a week later, but could possibly have their thanksgiving or Christmas break cut short.
A committee will soon decide what holidays will be shortened.
