Frist Aids Accident Victims

Incoming senate majority leader Bill Frist helped authorities tend to six victims of a rollover accident on a Florida highway this New Year's Day. And, he earned praise from paramedics for stabilizing some of the four survivors.

An Isuzu Rodeo with six people aboard was heading west on Alligator Alley in Broward County when it rolled over. All six passengers, including three children, were thrown out.

Senator Frist was driving east on the highway with his two sons, heading to a family vacation home in Fort Lauderdale. He came across the accident just after it had happened.

Frist stopped his car and checked on the accident victims. He helped paramedics and several off-duty firefighters until the victims were transported to an area hospital. A 10-year-old girl died on the scene and another passenger died later at an area hospital.

Frist, a Tennessee Republican, was a full time heart and lung surgeon before joining the Senate eight years ago.
