Elderly Man Sent to Hospital After Stabbing

An elderly DeFuniak Springs man is hospitalized in serious condition and his son is recovering as well from a brutal home invasion.

James Walker Junior has ten stitches in his throat after being stabbed on Sunday afternoon inside his DeFuniak Springs home.

Walker says the suspect, chad rushing, came to the front door to speak to his father.

72-year-old James Walker Senior who is wheel chair bound. At one time, the suspect had worked for the elder walker.

"I walked into the room and saw Mr. Rushing carving my dad's neck with a box-cutter. I told him to stop, and then got into a wrestling match with him for the knife; he managed to stab me before leaving," said James Walker.

After stabbing both father and son, the 40-year-old suspect took off and was arrested several hours later in northern Walton County.

He faces two-counts of attempted murder.

"The investigation continues, but it appears the suspect was after the elderly man's prescription medication," said Lt. Bill Chapman.

One area resident says recently she was the victim of a home invasion, and for the same thing, prescription medication.

"It happened on Saturday, where they took my medication. Then the following Monday I let someone in, and then my money was gone. And this is somebody I allowed into my home," said Rita Manning.

Rushing is being held without bond at the Walton County Jail on the two attempted murder charges.

Authorities tell News 4 that the suspect, Rushing has a long history of criminal arrests dating back more than 20 years.

Several of those charges are reportedly drug-related.
