HANOI, Vietnam - Vietnam's prime minister is making a groundbreaking visit to the U.S. Phan Van Khai will spend the week seeking closer ties with Washington and support for Vietnam's bid to join the World Trade
Organization.
Khai's June visit to the U.S. is the first by a Vietnamese prime minister since the Vietnam War ended 30 years ago. He said in an interview with The Associated Press last week that his presence in the U.S. would symbolize that the two countries have put resentments over the war "behind us."
His first stop is in in Seattle, where he's to oversee the purchase of four Boeing jetliners by Vietnam Airlines and meet with business leaders including Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.
Khai will meet with President Bush on Tuesday. He'll also visit New York and Boston.
