Internet File Sharing

The recording industry is praising today's Supreme Court decision on Internet file-sharing.

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court found that Internet file-sharing services should be held responsible if their purpose is to allow customers to illegally swap movies and music.

The head of the Recording Industry Association of America says the court, "has helped to power the digital future for legitimate online businesses."

But the computer industry calls it, "a very dangerous decision for technology and innovation." A spokesman for the Computer and Communications Industry Association says the ruling will discourage companies from developing new products.

Monday’s decision sends the case back to lower courts that had ruled in favor of two file-sharing services.

The lawyer for the companies says he'll argue in a new trial that they did not encourage computer users to illegally download music and movies.
