All roads lead to Chipley, Florida this weekend for the Washington County's 49th Annual Watermelon Festival. Thousands of people attend each year to munch on the traditional summer fruit. This weekend's festival will have plenty of free slices. For nearly five decades the festival has attracted some of the nation's top entertainers and elected officials.
The festival activities begin Friday night, 6:30pm, at the campgrounds in Chipley, with several bluegrass groups performing. The Watermelon Parade begins Saturday morning at 10 in downtown Chipley. Other activities include a 5,000 Meter Run, Pancake Breakfast, a Downtown Street Fair, and arts and crafts.

Tips for picking a good watermelon:
1. Choose a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts and dents.
2. Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size.
3. Turn it over. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.
