At least eight people received minor injuries after an apparent tornado touched down in southeast Alabama early Tuesday.

The twister knocked out power lines, damaged at least four mobile homes and turned over small airplanes at an airfield.

Bob Goree, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida said a line of severe thunderstorms packing high winds and rain moved into Alabama from Mississippi Tuesday night.

Goree said the tornado touched down in Henry County at about 6:45 a.m. Most of the damage was in the Haleburg and Headland areas, where winds knocked out power to businesses and scattered debris along Highways 431 and 95.

The storm is also blamed for turning over small airplanes at Headland Airport.
Henry County Emergency Management director Paul Brown said most of the injured live in the Haleburg area.

Brown said several structures were damaged and numerous trees were downed by the severe storm. There were reports of additional minor damage, such as downed trees, in Houston and Pike counties.

The storm system moved into neighboring Georgia -- some storm damage is also reported in three counties in southwest Georgia, near the Alabama line.
