Tons of sand are coming into the Alabama coast as the Beach Restoration Project is in full swing. The 2005 Orange Beach, Gulf State Park and Gulf Shores Restoration Project is a comprehensive beach nourishment program that is being done to restore more than 15 miles of beaches along Alabama’s coastline. The project area was badly damaged during Hurricane Ivan in September of last year. Sand for the beach restoration project is obtained from areas located offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Work began in mid-February and will continue until after Labor Day in September.
