Father of Former HealthSouth CEO Dies

SELMA, AL - Gerald Marin Scrushy, father of fired HealthSouth Corp. CEO Richard Scrushy, has died. He was 82.

A longtime Selma resident, Gerald Scrushy died June 20th at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma. He suffered a brain stem hemorrhage on Saturday.

Richard Scrushy is accused of leading a 2.7 billion dollar earnings overstatement at the Birmingham-based chain of rehabilitation and medical centers. Jurors were scheduled to begin their 17th day of deliberations June 21st in the fraud trial.

Gerald Scrushy was retired from National Cash Register Company. He and his late wife, Grace, also owned G.G. Enterprises. The company received millions of dollars from HealthSouth for providing computers and consulting services from 1992 through 1997. HealthSouth paid 7.9 million dollars in 2001 to settle a Medicare investigation related to G.G. Enterprises.

Gerald Scrushy is also survived by son Jerry, daughter Demisha
and ten grandchildren.
