Florida Power Blackout Remains A Puzzle

MIAMI (AP) - It could be days -- weeks, even -- before we find out what left millions of people in south Florida in the dark.

Power executives are trying to figure out how a glitch at a substation triggered yesterday's blackout. The outage darkened traffic signals, forced hospitals to scramble for generators and cut off air conditioners.

Tuesday's outages spanned 300 miles of the Florida peninsula but appeared to be concentrated in the southeast portion of the state.

While the outage cut power to 2 million to 3 million people at its peak, power was quickly restored to most parts of the state and authorities say no injuries were reported.

A Florida Power and Light spokeswoman says the utility can't be sure how long it will take before the explanation for the blackout is found.
