GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) -- Gulf Shores police say a 36-year-old man drowned while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico surf.

The Press-Register reports that Michael Thomas Herron of Parrish, Ala., drowned Wednesday afternoon in front of the Crystal Shores West condominium tower.

Sgt. Jason Woodruff says Herron was swimming with his family and friends, and they realized he was having trouble and pulled him to shore.

Herron was pronounced dead at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley.

City officials say this is the fourth drowning in the Gulf Shores this year.
