PORT ORANGE, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say they've found human remains in the backyard of a central Florida man already facing child rape and kidnapping charges.
Port Orange police say 44-year-old James Maxwell is a suspect in the death of the person they found. Officials say they have a good idea of who it is, but they won't release the identity publicly until it's confirmed by a medical examiner. They did confirm that the body was extremely decomposed and had likely been there for more than a year.
Maxwell -- a convicted felon -- has been in jail since December, when authorities say he abducted a 9-year-old girl, drove her to a wooded area and raped her. He then dropped her off the next morning at Port Orange police headquarters.
Volusia County jail records didn't list an attorney for Maxwell.
