A jury has recommended the death penalty for a California man convicted of killing a five-year-old girl he abducted outside her home.
The defendant showed no emotion as the verdict was announced.
The factory worker, Alejandro Avila, was convicted last month of killing and sexually assaulting Samantha Runnion. The child was seized kicking and screaming as she played near her home in July 2002. Her body was found the next day some 50 miles away.
