A US official seems to be questioning a report that a terrorist leader in Iraq has been injured.
An Internet posting says Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (AH'-boo MOO'-sahb
ahl-zahr-KOW'-ee) is wounded and asks Muslims to pray for his recovery. The militant Web site posting could not be verified, but appeared to come from the group Al-Qaida in Iraq.
When asked about whether al-Zarqawi had been hurt, a State Department spokesman said he didn't know. But one U-S official says
the government is exploring the possibility that the statement was purposefully misleading.
There have been several recent reports that US forces have been closing in on Iraq's most-wanted terrorist. One said the US military was investigating whether al-Zarqawi was being treated at a hospital in Ramadi, Iraq. The reports were never confirmed.
