Hurricane Victims Urged to Move Out of Trailers

ATLANTA (AP) - Hurricane victims who have lived in government-supplied trailers aren't surprised that the trailers aren't particularly healthful.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that people be moved out of the trailers as quickly as possible after tests found toxic levels of formaldehyde fumes.

The trailers were supplied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Jim Herring, who recently moved out of a trailer and back into his partially renovated house, says the workmanship of the trailer "is pathetic," adding that they "were not meant to be lived in for a year."

In some trailers, the levels of the fumes were nearly 40 times customary exposure levels, raising fears that residents could contract respiratory problems.
