Alabama Farmers Federation Meeting

farm

Republican Governor-elect Bob Riley is urging one of his biggest supporters, the Alabama Farmers Federation, to keep an open mind when he begins his four-year term in January.

Riley addressed the agricultural group at its annual meeting Sunday night in Mobile. He did not specify what impending proposals would require the organization's understanding.

But Alfa President Jerry Newby, who introduced Riley as "a true friend to farmers," returned to the podium and said budget shortfalls could mean a renewed debate over taxes.

Alfa has opposed many tax hikes in the past.
