Shopping for that Thanksgiving turkey or ham won't cost as much this year, according to the Alabama Farmers Federation. But the group said consumers will pay higher prices for other holiday food items.
The Federation said its monthly survey of food prices show the average cost of 20 market basket items at slightly more than $38. That's an increase of about 13 cents from October's prices, but down 48 cents from 2001.
Turkeys averaged 99 cents a pound at Alabama supermarkets, a reduction of six cents a pound from last year. Hams are 20 cents cheaper at $1.27 a pound.
Grocery shoppers will find higher prices this month for eggs, dairy products, fruits and vegetables.
Across the state, the average market basket was highest in south Alabama at nearly $40 -- the lowest was recorded in northwest Alabama at $36.39.
