OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities investigating the death of a baby girl whose body was found in a drainage ditch are awaiting forensic evidence for more clues.
Opelika police Captain Allan Elkins said the only new information that could be released Tuesday was that the baby is a black female.
He told the Opelika-Auburn News that the tragedy was the first of its nature in the city.
Opelika police received a 911 call around 9 a.m. yesterday and found the baby unresponsive at Tree Top Apartments.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced the infant dead at the scene at 9:45 a.m. Authorities took the body to Montgomery for an autopsy.
