Holmes County Sheriff's Race

For the last two years, some Holmes County residents have been at odds about who really won the Sheriff’s race in the 2000 Election.

On election night, incumbent Sheriff Dennis Lee defeated former Sheriff John Braxton by only five votes.

After that, Braxton filed a civil suit claiming election fraud. The matter is now in court.

Braxton's attorney claims there were numerous improprieties including missing ballots and two different counts, one of which had Braxton defeating Lee.

Holmes County Supervisor of Elections Debbie Wilcox-Morris was one of the first witnesses called. She said there were some unexplained occurrences, but nothing fraudulent.

Retired Judge Michael Myers is presiding over the trial. He'll make the ultimate decision on whether there should be a recount.
